A few guiding thoughts and questions:
How will this information help or hinder me?
Do I want to know that my baby is affected before the baby is born? Would testing simply make me more anxious, rather than less anxious? Am I willing to accept the increased risk of miscarriage associated with a diagnostic test such as chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis? Will this information help me choose a birth site? Become educated? Find support groups? Am I strongly opposed to pregnancy termination even if I have a baby affected with (fill in the blank)? Would I terminate this pregnancy if I know my baby is affected with (fill in the blank)? Why should I have screening or diagnostic tests if I am fine with any outcome the baby might have? If there is no treatment or therapy for the condition tested are the findings helpful to me/us or not?

Parenting
|
Becoming a parent for the first time, or the parent of an expanding family, offers opportunities for growth. You will likely meet sides of yourself you hadn't known before! Boundaries are challenged. New perspectives discovered. Old wounds open.
My commitment as a community midwife to protecting a non-violent space for birth is rooted in my belief in non-violent parenting and self-forgiveness as adults on a journey. |
